Life's Busy Weeks: Embracing the Chaos
Oh, what a hectic week I had! Like many of us, I found myself juggling two major deadlines, diving into a significant cabinet clean-out, and preparing for not one, but two book events for Drowning in the Shallows. By Friday night, I felt stretched to my limits—physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Finding Focus in the Midst of Distractions
It’s easy to let chaos seep into our hearts during such busy times. We often become consumed by what’s immediately in front of us—our packed schedules, looming problems, and ambitious goals seem to take center stage. I sometimes feel like a circus performer, balancing all these spinning plates, desperately trying not to let any crash down.
However, it’s crucial to remember that these stresses are fleeting. As the scripture from 2 Corinthians 4:18 says, “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.” In days when the noise of life is deafening, this verse reminds us to shift our gaze away from our hectic schedules and focus instead on the bigger picture—on the things that truly matter.
God’s Invitation to Lift Our Eyes
God calls us to lift our eyes and see beyond the immediate chaos. He invites us to observe the beauty of life beyond the clamor—the relationships we cherish, the opportunities for growth, and the moments of joy that often go unnoticed. When we focus on these unseen blessings, we foster a sense of peace that wraps around our busy lives like a warm blanket.
As I struggled through the last few hectic weeks, I had to consciously stop and remind myself to be in the moment, to focus on what really matters. Taking a few minutes to breathe deeply, reflect on my blessings, and seek God’s guidance helped me regain my focus. During chaos, it’s essential to maintain perspective and keep our eyes on the prize; otherwise, we risk losing sight of what brings us fulfillment.
Productivity vs. Purpose
There’s no denying that life can become overwhelming. But as we shift our focus towards what is unseen, we can be productive AND purposeful at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive. Prioritizing tasks that nourish our spirit rather than drain it helps us manage chaos effectively. Whether it’s engaging in daily prayer, expressing gratitude, or simply taking time for yourself, these practices can be transformative.
So, when life gets chaotic, let’s remember to “keep our eyes on the prize.” The temporary distractions will always be there, but the opportunity to find joy and peace in God’s presence is what sustains us. Let’s strive to lift our eyes above the noise and chaos, allowing our spirits to recharge and carry us forward towards our true purpose.
